  • STEM Activities in Year 5 - Gambian Visitors

    Thu 29 Mar 2012
Year 5 been very lucky to have Mr Bolam, a teacher from Southlands High School, to come and work with them in class during this half term.

Mr Bolam has been working with Year 5 on STEM challenges, which use their knowledge of science, technology, engineering and maths.

Today Mr Bolam brought along with him for the lesson some very special visitors who had travelled all the way from the Gambia!

Southlands are linked with a school in Bijilo in Gambia, who they visit and support. Three teachers from this school came to visit Southlands, and also paid our primary school a visit whilst they were over here!

It was wonderful to welcome Mr Kebba Fatty, Mr Almamo Federa and Mr Sana Daffeh to Coppull Parish, and we really valued their help with our woodwork challenge!  We also asked them some questions about what it is like in Gambia and how different their school is from  ours.

Here are some of the interesting things we found out...
    • Their school has over 1200 children, over 1000 more than ours!
    • Their school day starts at 8am and lasts until 2pm, or it begins at 2pm and lasts until 6.30pm!  They have that many pupils they have to have two separate shifts!
    • All of the lessons are taught in English, even though there are eight different languages spoken there.
    • They had never seen (or travelled) on a train or double decker bus.  Only one of them had been on a plane before this visit!

It was lovely to welcome them to our school and hope they
enjoyed their visit as much as we did!

  • Y1 Class Assembly

    Tue 13 Mar 2012
Today we were all treated to a class worship assembly led by Year 1 and Miss Green.

During the assembly the children shared some of the wonderful work that they have been doing as part of the 'Discovery' topic for this half term.  They have been looking in particular at buildings and have produced their very own junk models of many different types of buildings - I'm sure you'd agree that they look fanastic!

They also shared the story of The Three Little Pigs with us which we all really enjoyed.

Many thanks to Year 1 for sharing their learning with us.  Thank you also to Miss Green, Mrs Lurrie and Mrs Ruler for all their hard work in preparing for the assembly.
  • Helping The Green Finger Charity

    Fri 09 Mar 2012

This week we have been busy creating our very own scarecrows to help raise money for 'Greenfingers- Creating Gardens in Children's Hospices'.  Working on the Peter Rabbit theme, many different children have helped to make our very own Mr McGregor, Peter Rabbit, Benjamin Bunny and even a wheelbarrow full of vegetables!

Local primary schools have been invited to help raise money by making a scarecrow and displaying it at Birkacre Garden Centre. The public will vote for their favourite by putting money in a collection bucket next to the scarecrow, so please go along to see them and help raise donations for this great cause.

Many thanks to Mrs Hayley and Mrs Tyrer for all their help with producing these wonderful scarecrows.
Maybe our creation will be the winner?

  • Drumming Workshops for Y3 & Y5

    Mon 05 Mar 2012
Since the 6th February, children from Y3 and Y5 have been taking part in a drumming workshop every Monday morning with a music teacher from Southlands High School.

During the four lessons the children have been using many different types of drums and have enjoyed creating their own rhythms and songs.  All of the children have thoroughly enjoyed the opportunity and didn't want the lessons to end!

Here are the children during their last drumming session which took place today.
