Jewish faith visitor to Coppull Parish

We were delighted to welcome Rachel to Coppull Parish today to talk to the children in Year 4 and 6 about her Jewish faith and traditions.

As Year 6 have been studying the Exodus, this was their focus today. Mrs Jones, their teacher, reports that the children really impressed Rachel with their knowledge of the Exodus and re-told the story of Moses accurately. Rachel then talked about how her family, who are Reform Jews, celebrate the Passover with the Seder meal and traditions. Our children were particularly interested to learn that mobile phones and devices were not allowed during this period, as it is a spiritual time of reflection so these distractions are put aside for the Passover period.

Meanwhile, in Year 4, Rachel helped the children understand the importance and traditions of Shabbat in the Jewish faith. Rachel had brought in some of the clothing that Jews wear for this event, such as the kippah (head covering) and the tallit (prayer shawl). Rachel also told us the importance of reading the Torah, lighting the candles and not working on the sabbath. The children were very interested and intrigued about this important ritual in the Jewish faith.

Afterwards, Rachel reported that she had a wonderful time and was deeply impressed about the amount of learning that the children had retained about Judaism. She is looking forward to coming back and helping even more of our children bring their learning to life. Thank you to Rachel!
