World Book Day Poetry Slam
What a brilliant day we have had today for WBD 2024. This year we decided to focus on poetry books and asked all the children to come in dressed as a character from a poem or nursery rhyme and they looked absolutely amazing. I don’t think two children wore the same outfit, there was so much imagination on display: we even had a real live Muffin Man, who brought in a tin of delicious muffins for us to eat. We started the morning with an incredible Poetry Slam, that saw all classes performing some wonderful poems and raps, with actions and humour – they had it all. What a fantastic way to celebrate WBD. Thank you to all our families for finding the outfits and helping the children to learn their poems. It was wonderful!! Take a look at our photographs of children and staff joining in the fun.
This is Careers Week, so we have arranged for a few visitors to join us and tell the children all about their careers. On Monday morning, we had a visit from Jen, who is a copywriter, and Izzy, who is a marketing executive, from Buzz Education, to talk to the whole school about their careers. First of all, we explained that there are many different jobs and careers available to them when they leave school, but they need to make sure they choose something they enjoy doing and that they are good at and school can help them with this.
Jen and Izzy then explained what their jobs entailed and what skills and knowledge they needed to gain employment, and what subjects they needed to work hard at in order to do their job well. Our Kingdom Club also led a 'Who am I?' role play with the school, who did an excellent job of working out which careers they were portraying.
Afterwards, Jen led a workshop in our Year 5 class creating a holiday brochure, while Izzy led a workshop in Year 4 on persuasive advertising. Both classes are going to complete their projects and send it to Buzz Education for feedback.
We also had a fabulous visit from David from Community Rail, who delivered an important talk about rail safety before telling the children about all the varied careers on the railways: from drivers, engineers, cleaners, conductors, dispatchers and the people who work in the ticket offices. He also brought a range of outfits for the children to wear and explained each of the roles. What a great information session we had.
Our visitors and the follow up work we have had in class have definitely got the children thinking about what careers they might like in future and what skills and knowledge they need to acquire.
🎅 Breakfast with Santa 🎅 What a wonderful morning we’ve had! A big thank you to the PTFA for organising this fantastic event. The children had a great time and couldn’t believe that Father Christmas knew what they had been learning about in class. To finish the morning off each child received a present from Santa 🎁
On Friday, Year 6 were lucky enough to have a visit from Emma Charnock, who works for Balvac Balfour Beatty, who undertake the repair and refurbishment of the Silver Jubilee Bridge in Runcorn. She showed them a series of bridge constructions and discussed the merits of different building approaches, then set them a bridge building challenge, using a limited number of straws and construction tape. The children had to really think about the best way to bridge a 20cm gap between chairs whilst holding up a container of pennies. This involved understanding how to keep the cup upright, stable and building strength into their bases. It took a lot of trial and error and working together as a team, but they took on the challenge and had a good go. Only one team was entirely successful, but well done to everyone for persevering and a big thank you to Mrs Charnock for this great opportunity (and all the lovely gifts).
Coppull Parish, along with the other local schools, were approached by Chorley Borough Council and Lancashire Constabulary to support them with an art initiative to combat hate crime in the local area. We were more than happy to take part, as at Coppull Parish we feel strongly that everyone from any culture, no matter where they were born, or which faith they follow should be welcomed into our community with kindness, love and respect. Our children welcomed the opportunity to produce a range of art which promoted love, not hate, and they created some beautiful and thought provoking art for the competition. And guess what? SIX of our children won and their art work now forms part of a graffiti mural on the side of the Springfield Pub and the railway embankment in Coppull. Here are a few photographs of the presentation ceremony, which took place at the Springfield Pub on Friday 20th October. A huge well done to Noah, Harvey, Oscar, Daisy, Cora and Mia for their winning entries and promoting love over hate in Coppull.
As part of their History learning this term, our Year 1 class have been investigating toys from the past. We needed our families help with this and asked them to send in any toys that they loved or played with when they were young, so that we could set up a Toy Museum for our children to explore. As you can see by the exhibits, the children wrote explanations for the games and toys, and then spent an enjoyable time playing with them. Thank you to everyone who brought in exhibits for our museum, all the visitors who enjoyed it - and well done to our Year 1 historians!
Our Reading Shed fell into a sorry state of disrepair last year. So we have spent a bit of time rebuilding, re-painting and refurbishing it over the Summer, so that it is a welcoming and cosy place to sit and relax with a good book, or comic during break times. We've got a team of volunteers who are going to help keep it tidy too. A big thank you to Mr Bird for all his carpentry skills and Mrs Clarkson for making it so cosy.
Coppull Parish is a wonderful school, but we never rest on our laurels, we are always trying to find new ways of making the school even better - a place of excellence. One of the ways we are doing this is by teaching the children to reflect critically on their work and through ‘kind, specific and helpful’ peer critique, to produce several drafts in order to make their work the best it can possibly be. During the first two weeks of term, our Year 1-6 classes were creating some fabulously creative art work, which they have improved through feedback, in order to produce work, they are truly proud of.
As a result of all their hard work, we held an ‘Excellence Exhibition’ today to showcase their amazing art work and, in some cases, show the progress from their starting points to the final display piece. Families, friends, neighbours and the local community were all invited to join us, to see what a huge difference ‘not settling for your first attempt’ really makes.
Please take a look and judge the progress for yourselves.
We held our annual MacMillan Coffee Morning today, on a very wet and blustery September morning. However, our families did not let us down, they braved the dreadful weather and came and joined us for refreshments. Thank you so much to the staff and parents who did all the baking for us and to everyone that attended the event and helped us raised much needed funds for this wonderful charity.
We decided to hire a swimming pool, from Pro-Sport, to ensure that our children had first class small group swimming tuition in the school grounds. This way, we saved travelling time and made sure that children spent the maximum time in the water, with the instructor, and lifeguard looking on. At the end of two weeks, the whole of Year 3, Year 2 and any previous non-swimmers from Year 4, 5 and 6 have ALL been swimming. It has been wonderful and so many of our children are now water confident and able swimmers. Well done everyone!!!
