Geography
Intent
At Coppull Parish we immerse children within our Geography curriculum in order for children to know more, remember more and understand more about the world we live in. We teach Geography in a creative, inclusive manner, developing children’s passion for our community, country and wider world. We inspire curious global citizens who can compassionately take responsibility for the world that we live in and who are fascinated by our wonderful world along with its diverse people. We ensure that children understand the natural and human environments together with a deep understanding of the Earth’s key physical and human processes. We believe our Geography curriculum helps children to gain knowledge of current geographical issues and how our world has and will change over time.
Underpinned by the following Coppull Parish Curriculum Drivers:
Diversity – Through our Geography teaching and learning our children gain knowledge and
understanding about different and diverse countries, people, cultures and compare and contrast parts of the world.
Speaking and Listening – Within our Geography lessons children have the opportunity to learn, use and explore geographical vocabulary. Children participate in debates and work in a collaborative manner where all views and opinions are respected and considered.
Implementation
Our Geography Curriculum has been written by us. We take our skills from the National Curriculum, however tailor them to our school and children’s individual needs. We ensure our children learn and care about their local environment through class based study and through getting out and about within the community and conducting geographical fieldwork. Children are immersed within their geography learning through our creative topic approach which involves blocking our geography lessons, resulting in high impact and enjoyment. We supplement our geography curriculum in several ways: field trips including residentials, visits and visitors.
Impact
Our children are curious and compassionate about not only our local area but the wider world too. They know about globally significant places and their defining human and physical features. They can interpret a range of sources of geographical information, including maps, diagrams, globes, aerial photographs and Geographical Information Systems. We assess the children at the end of each term and leaders analyse data provided by class teachers. This is used to prompt next steps in learning. Our children make good progress within Geography and enjoy their topics which are creatively taught. Children have a thirst for knowledge which bleeds into their home learning, often choosing to produce outstanding pieces of work, whether this is an exploding volcano or a whole project based around a country or continent! Children view their geography skills as life long skills where their passion for this subject shapes the global citizen that they become.
