Reading

Intent
In the early stages of reading, phonics is prioritised to provide children with a strong foundation. Daily, systematic phonics teaching ensures that beginners develop the skills to decode and blend words successfully. Beyond phonics, we promote a love of reading across the school by embedding high-quality texts throughout the curriculum. Pupils are encouraged to read widely across fiction and non-fiction, helping them to develop knowledge of themselves, the world around them, and different cultures, while also enhancing comprehension skills and critical thinking.
It is our intention that, by the end of their primary education, all pupils are confident and fluent readers who can access texts across the curriculum. This ensures that they are fully prepared for secondary education and have the literacy skills required for lifelong learning.
Reading for pleasure
At Coppull Parish, we want to instil a love of reading in our children. Reading for pleasure comes in many different formats, be that graphic novels, chapter stories, picture books or even in digital form.
The National Year of Reading 2026 is a major UK-wide campaign, branded as "Go All In," aimed at reversing the decline in reading for pleasure among children and adults. Led by the National Literacy Trust and the Department for Education, the campaign seeks to make reading a joyful, habitual part of daily life by connecting it to personal passions like gaming, football, music, and fashion. As a school we are working towards supporting this campaign, we have kicked off our project by revamping our school library to make it an inviting and inspiring place to be for all our children.
