Intent

At Coppull Parish CE Primary School, we believe that physical education is a vital part of a broad and balanced curriculum and plays a key role in developing confidence, resilience and a lifelong love of physical activity.

Our curriculum is designed to:

  • Provide pupils with opportunities to become physically competent, confident and knowledgeable across a wide range of activities, including gymnastics, dance, games, swimming, athletics and outdoor adventurous activities
  • Develop fundamental movement skills from the very start of school, building strong foundations in Early Years and Key Stage One, and enabling pupils to apply these skills confidently in Key Stage Two
  • Promote positive attitudes towards health, fitness and wellbeing, encouraging pupils to lead active, healthy lifestyles
  • Foster independence, engagement and enjoyment in physical education for all pupils
  • Ensure all pupils, regardless of starting point, can access and succeed in P.E

We promote physical activity throughout the school day through active lessons, daily active minutes and engaging play opportunities at lunchtimes, supported by our playleaders. Our extensive and popular extra-curricular programme further enriches our P.E curriculum and provides opportunities for all pupils to participate and excel.

We want our pupils to develop a lifelong love of physical activity and to leave our school with the knowledge, skills and motivation to lead healthy, active lives.

Implementation

Our PE lessons follow the Get Set 4 PE scheme of work, which supports teacher subject knowledge and ensures high quality pupil outcomes. Get Set 4 PE is an AfPE approved scheme of work.

Key Features of our approach:

  • Lessons are carefully sequenced to build on prior learning, allowing pupils to develop fundamental movement skills in the Early Years and Key Stage One before applying these skills in more complex activities in Key Stage Two
  • Teachers are supported with clear planning, assessment tools and subject knowledge guidance, enabling them to deliver engaging and inclusive lessons for all pupils
  • A wide range of activities, including gymnastics, dance, games, athletics, swimming and outdoor adventurous activities, are taught to provide breadth and balance within the curriculum
  • Opportunities for repetition and practice are embedded, allowing pupils to refine techniques and improve performance over time
  • Assessment for learning is used effectively to adapt teaching, ensuring all pupils are appropriately challenged and supported

We enrich our curriculum through active play following the OPAL approach, daily physical activity and a broad extra-curricular offer, providing pupils with additional opportunities to practise skills, take part in competition and develop teamwork and leadership.

Through this structured and inclusive approach, we ensure that all pupils develop the knowledge, skills and confidence to participate fully in physical activity and sport, supporting them in leading healthy, active lifestyles.

Impact

At Coppull Parish CE Primary School, the impact of our Physical Education curriculum is that pupils leave our school as confident, competent and enthusiastic participants in physical activity, equipped with the knowledge and skills to lead healthy, active lives.

Through the consistent implementation of the Get Set 4 PE scheme of work, pupils demonstrate clear progression in their physical development, building on fundamental movement skills and applying them effectively across a wide range of activities.

The impact of our curriculum is evident in that pupils:

  • Show increasing confidence, competence and enjoyment in a variety of physical activities
  • Demonstrate improved physical skills, coordination and control as they move through the school
  • Use appropriate vocabulary to describe, evaluate and improve their own and others’ performance
  • Develop positive attitudes towards physical activity, teamwork and healthy competition
  • Understand the importance of leading a healthy, active lifestyle and make informed choices about their wellbeing
  • Participate enthusiastically in lessons, active playtimes and extra-curricular opportunities

All pupils, regardless of starting point, make good progress and feel included and successful within P.E. Our inclusive approach ensures that every child experiences achievement and develops a sense of pride in their physical abilities.

As a result, our pupils leave primary school with a lifelong appreciation of physical activity and the confidence to continue participating in sport and exercise beyond their time at Coppull Parish.
