Art & Design

Intent
At Coppull Parish CE Primary School, we believe that art is a vital part of a broad and balanced curriculum and plays a key role in nurturing creativity, confidence and self-expression. Through our use of AccessArt, we aim to provide all pupils with rich, diverse and meaningful artistic experiences.
Our curriculum is designed to:
- Inspire pupils to explore, experiment and take creative risks
- Develop technical skills in drawing, painting, sculpture and mixed media
- Build knowledge of artists, craftspeople and designers from a wide range of cultures and backgrounds
- Encourage pupils to reflect, evaluate and talk about their work using appropriate artistic vocabulary
- Ensure all pupils, regardless of starting point, can access and succeed in art
We want our pupils to see themselves as artists and to leave our school with a strong sense of creativity, curiosity and individuality.
Implementation
Art is taught through a carefully sequenced curriculum using AccessArt, which supports both teacher subject knowledge and high-quality pupil outcomes.
Key features of our approach include:
- Progressive skill development: Pupils revisit key skills such as drawing, colour, texture and form, building increasing control and confidence over time
- Exploratory approach: Lessons prioritise experimentation and process over perfect outcomes, allowing children to develop their own ideas
- Sketchbooks: Every child uses a sketchbook as a space to explore, practise, reflect and develop their thinking
- Artist study: Pupils learn about a diverse range of artists and use their work as inspiration for their own creations
- Vocabulary development: Teachers explicitly teach and model the language of art to support discussion and evaluation
- Inclusive practice: Lessons are adapted to ensure all pupils, including those with SEND, can fully participate and express themselves
Art is often linked to wider curriculum themes where appropriate, while still maintaining its integrity as a subject in its own right.

Impact
The impact of our art curriculum is seen in the confidence, creativity and individuality of our pupils.
Pupils will:
- Produce creative work that demonstrates developing skills and imagination
- Be able to discuss their work and the work of others using artistic vocabulary
- Show resilience and willingness to experiment and improve their work
- Demonstrate knowledge of a range of artists and cultural influences
- Take pride in their artwork and see themselves as artists
Sketchbooks provide clear evidence of progression in skills, knowledge and creativity over time. Pupil voice shows that children enjoy art, feel confident to express themselves and value the opportunity to be creative.
Ultimately, our art curriculum ensures that all pupils leave Coppull Parish with a strong foundation in artistic skills and a lifelong appreciation of creativity.
