Writing
Intent
Writing is a fundamental part of our curriculum at Coppull Parish. From Reception to Year 6, pupils are given purposeful and meaningful opportunities to develop and apply their writing skills across a wide range of contexts. Our aim is for all pupils to develop a secure understanding of the writing process, enabling them to become confident, independent authors who can produce well-structured, engaging and meaningful pieces of writing.
Our book-led curriculum inspires pupils to write with a clear sense of purpose and audience, drawing on high-quality texts to shape and enhance their own writing. We place a strong emphasis on the development of vocabulary and grammatical knowledge, equipping pupils with the tools to communicate ideas clearly, accurately and creatively.
Writing is embedded across the wider curriculum, providing regular opportunities for pupils to apply and refine their skills in different subjects and real-life contexts, ensuring their learning is purposeful and transferable.

Implementation
Writing is a vital and embedded part of our curriculum at Coppull Parish. From Reception to Year 6, pupils are provided with frequent and purposeful opportunities to develop and apply their writing skills across a wide range of subjects and contexts. Our aim is to ensure pupils fully understand the writing process so they can become confident, independent authors.
Through our book-led curriculum, children are inspired to write with purpose and for a range of audiences, including real-life contexts. This approach provides meaningful opportunities for writing, fostering engagement, creativity and a strong sense of audience.
Writing is also developed across the wider curriculum, allowing pupils to apply their skills in subjects such as history, geography and science, ensuring writing is purposeful, relevant and regularly practised.
- In Years 2–6, each academic year begins with a focus on Grammarsaurus Place Value for Punctuation and Grammar to secure key foundational skills. These are then revisited and applied throughout the year within extended writing.
- Handwriting is taught consistently using Letter-join to develop fluent, joined cursive writing. Spelling is taught through Little Wandle Letters and Sounds Revised in Reception to Year 2, and through a structured approach using Grammarsaurus from Year 3 to Year 6.
Across the curriculum, pupils are encouraged to broaden their vocabulary and apply their grammatical knowledge effectively, enabling them to write clearly, accurately and with increasing confidence for a range of purposes.
